The deep human need to violently break from conformity…

“A wild longing for strong emotions and sensations seethes in me, a rage against this toneless, flat, normal and sterile life. I have a mad impulse to smash something, a warehouse perhaps, or a cathedral, or myself, to commit outrages…”  Hermann Hesse

It seems the human need, deep within us all, to violently break from conformity has either led to  destruction or necessary change. But, an attempt to relate to the dark complexity of humanity brings understanding and connects us further.

Since the creation of books, various works have been published and written anonymously, often due to their political or controversial nature, or merely for the purposes of the privacy of their authors. They are often the most enigmatic, relatable, and profound. For the next year, along with my regular posts, I’ll be sharing the best anonymous quotes I can find. I’ll begin with my personal favorite…ENJOY!:)

“We are all in the process of Becoming – it is dangerous, painful, joyous, bloody work and even though there are days it tears me like tissue, I would not, I cannot, go back.”

The poet Rumi reminds us, “Don’t go back to sleep.”

“Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,
there is a field. I’ll meet you there.
When the soul lies down in that grass,
the world is too full to talk about.
Ideas, language, even the phrase “each other”
doesn’t make any sense.
The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.
Don’t go back to sleep.
You must ask for what you really want.
Don’t go back to sleep.
People are going back and forth across the doorsill
where the two worlds touch.
The door is round and open.
Don’t go back to sleep.”
